Netflix Releases Manti Te’o Story
Netflix recently released Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist, a documentary that focused on the catfishing hoax that involves Manti Te‘o, a former Notre Dame linebacker and Heisman Trophy candidate. The film revealed the truth of the situation from both Te‘o’s perspective as well as the point of view of Ronaiah “Naya” Tuiasosopo, who posed as Lennay Kekua to catfish the former rising football star.
A KS junior said that “Manti was taken advantage of and he didn’t deserve [what happened to him].”
In the film, Tuiasosopo expresses the whole online relationship with Te‘o made her transition into becoming a transgender woman difficult because she was torn about whether she should reveal the truth about her identity or not. Senior Pomai Varron shared her frustration with Tuiasosopo and said, “what [Tuiasosopo] did was messed up and she has no right to complain about how the situation affected her transition because she brought it on herself.”
According to a student who wished to remain anonymous, the process of switching genders may have been a difficult process but there are healthier ways to go about it.

Aloha! Iʻm Auliʻi Anuenue Medeiros and am from the Kailua-Kaneohe area of the island. This year I am a senior and am excited for my first year with Ka Mōʻī. I chose to join this class because I have an interest in writing and wanted to see if journalism was the right path for me. Besides writing, I enjoy reading, listening to music, dancing, surfing, and doing all kinds of sports. Outside of school, you can often find me at the beach, working out at the gym, or just hanging out with friends and family. I am excited to be on this year’s Ka Mōʻī staff and am looking forward to all of the stories we are going to be able to share :)
