The Secret Behind a Winning Team
After winning their 19th ILH title, the varsity volleyball girls prepared themselves for another hectic week for the upcoming state tournament. The question whispered in the halls of Kamehameha as the day came near; what is the secret to their wins?
“Teamwork makes the dream work is the perfect saying to describe the foundation of what our volleyball team is all about,” said varsity coach Christopher Blake, who has been coaching volleyball for Kamehameha for almost 14 years. Even with 6 girls allowed on the court, Coach Blake feels that when the girls play, the motivation and spirit of all of them are on the court. Along with 19 ILH titles the volleyball girls have gained over the years, the program has also collected 20 State titles.
“I’ve been here a long time and I do hope that when my seniors go that they take the same skills and values that they’ve gained here, they will continue it when they advance to the next level,” said Coach Blake as he made a final remark to the seniors a part of the team. With 7 seniors on the team and graduating in a few months, the team is already looking forward to next season.
“We came up short this year at the State’s game, but I am looking forward to redeem ourselves next season and bring the koa back to the hill,” said junior libero Kealani Ontai. On October 29, the volleyball girls lost the state tournament against ‘Iolani in a battle that lasted 4 sets.
“Yet, this setback will only bring a stronger come back for next season,” said senior outside hitter Tymane Talanoa. Teamwork made the dream work for the volleyball girls this year and their streak of taking ILH or State titles will continue for the next couple of years at Kamehameha.
