KSK Girl’s Varsity Team Secure State Victory
Over the stormy weekend of Feb. 4 and 5, Kamehameha Kapālama’s Varsity Girls Paddling team took home the victory in the HHSAA State Championship, which was held at Keehi Lagoon on Saturday. Schools from all over the state flew into Honolulu to compete in the championship regatta, but only a few would take home a victory, which includes Kamehameha Kapālama’s very own wāhine. The winning Varsity girls’ crew was made up of Kamalei Sataraka, Halia Sniffen, Maile Brown, Mahie Kaleleiki, Kanaiaulani Aweau-Savusa, and Tessia Mauai. In addition, Kahikinui Delo, Mehana Silva, and Wailea Daniels Faith Brandt were also members of the winning Varsity team.
Coming in at a whopping 4 minutes and 14 seconds, KS Kapālama took first place in the Varsity Girls final, finishing almost 7 seconds ahead of Punahou who now holds the second-place title. In the Varsity Boys Final, KS Kapālama kāne took fifth place with 3 minutes and 47 seconds on the clock, as Punahou solidified a first-place spot at 3 minutes and 28 seconds. For the Varsity Mixed Final, Kamehameha Kapālama came in fourth place at 4 minutes and 13 seconds, placing behind Punahou (1), Seabury Hall (2), and Waimea (3).
Kamehameha senior Tessia Mauai states, “I think we trained super diligently throughout the entire season and we had the privilege of extremely knowledgeable coaches.” When asked about the Girl’s Varsity win, she added, “I think the success comes with the strong pilina and friendships within the team.”
Overall, a huge congratulations to the talented and skilled Kamehameha Kapālama Paddlers, and a special shout-out to the Varsity Girls’ team for bringing home the lanakila!

Hey everyone!! My name is Terina, and this is my first year being a part of Ka Mōʻī. I used to be a border from Hawai'i Island, but now live in Kaneohe. I am currently a senior and I am excited to spend my last year on campus working to build the best newspaper for all of you! Something that takes up my life outside of school is Subway, which is where I work when I'm not busy with homework. My post-high plans are to attend college on the East Coast (hopefully in Massachusetts, New York, or Chicago!) and major in Broadcast and Digital Journalism. Although it is frequently changing, my dream career would be anything from a Reporter to a traveling Journalist. I feel that through this class, I will strengthen my passion for writing and get a realistic feel for what these careers could provide for me. Hope that this year is amazing for everyone!
