Cheer: The Netflix Craze
Netflix has come out with a new series about the national winning college cheerleading team Navarro, from Daytona, Florida.
This was a production put out by Netflix that was very popular among cheerleaders and even those who have never associated themselves with cheerleading. Cheerleaders support the show because it spread awareness of what cheerleading actually is.
Junior, Maile Look said, “I enjoyed Cheer because so many of my peers did not know how intense cheerleading was until they watched the show. They started using cheer terminology and started asking me how cheer was going.”
Cheer also gave insight into the character’s personal lives, as it was a reality show. Many non-cheerleaders felt that they could relate to the cheerleaders because the characters were experiencing real-world issues and had to put up a front like all of us do every day.
Senior, Jeili DelaCruz said, “Although I am not a cheerleader, I watched the show and found it amusing because of the way the cheerleaders were so open about their personal lives; I really felt for Jerry.”
Jerry Harris is a cheerleader in the show. He is portrayed as the underdog who wants to be put in the routine and is constantly there for his team. At a young age, he went through the life struggle of losing a parent, but he is still able to put on a smile every day. Many say that he gives them hope to get through their tough times because when you look at him, you would never guess that he went through what he did.
Senior, Caitlin Arakaki says, “If you haven’t watched Cheer, watch it!”

Hi! My name is Lisa Hopoi and I’m from ʻAiea. I’ve been attending Kamehameha since the 7th grade and I’m currently a Senior. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved to write stories and I can’t wait to take part in Ka Mōʻī. I am most interested in the interviewing aspect of Ka Mōʻī because I love to hear what people have to say about different events happening around campus. I hope to spread the news and keep everyone up to date about what’s happening around campus.
