How Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” Remains Iconic After 25 Years
As winter approaches us with festive decorations and longer nights, it is almost inevitable to make it through December without hearing Mariah Carey’s holiday classic, “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
The festive masterpiece written and performed by Carey in 1994 is celebrating its 25th anniversary of dominating each Christmas season. Since its debut, Carey has earned more than $60 million in royalties and reportedly $500,000 each year excluding licensing fees or streaming costs. The song made history in Christmas of 2018 when it placed #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, the first-holiday song in 60 years to make it to the top 5 on the charts. The song was also recently honored by the Guinness World Records with three records, “Highest-Charting Holiday Song on the US Hot 100 by a Solo Artist, Most Streamed Track on Spotify in 24 Hours (Female), Most Weeks in the UK Singles Top 10 Chart for a Christmas Song.”
Carey tells Billboard, “I’m very thankful that people seem to still have an attachment to it, it makes me feel good when people tell me that it’s part of their lives.” Covered by popular artists including John Mayer, Demi Lovato, and My Chemical Romance, the song is cherished in the music industry. Senior Olivia Sakys says, “All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey embodies the chaotic energy of the Christmas season.”
