The new cast of HSMTMTS pay tribute to the original movie, High School Musical.

When Disney announced the launch of ‘High School Musical: The Musical – The Series’ on their new streaming platform, Disney+, all former HSM fans went crazy.

Trailers and songs for the new series have been released sporadically for the past few weeks, leading up to the first episode’s debut on November 12, 2019. The other nine subsequent episodes will be airing each Friday on the new streaming service. There are ten episodes in total for HSMTMTS’s first season.

While the original cast members of High School Musical won’t be a part of this new series, HSMTMTS follows another high school putting on a play of the original movie, meaning that cast members will be playing themselves as well as versions of the movie’s original characters like Troy, Gabriella, and Sharpay. Playing Troy and Gabriella in this new series will be Nini, played by actress Olivia Rodrigo, and her ex-boyfriend, Ricky, played by actor Joshua Bassett, who auditions for the play solely to try and win her back.

“The purpose of HSMTMTS is really more about paying tribute to the original,” said the creator of the new series, Tim Federle. The series follows the students of East High, where they decide to put on a play dedicated to the original HSM that took place at their school. This show is solely structured around the kids of East High making the musical.

Audiences will be thrilled to know that all of the original HSM songs will be included in the new series as well as a few originals from the cast as they go through all of the backstage relationship drama and rehearsal struggles. There will also be easter eggs and references to the original movie imbedded in the ten episodes. With the first season not having even been fully released yet, season two of the series has already been confirmed for next year.
